I got a call this week from a manufacturing firm that said: “Bob, how come you never cover manufacturing in your newsletters?”  So, as a result, this week I am covering manufacturing sales on the GSA Schedules.

The manufacturing sector is covered by all NAICS codes with the first two digits that are either 31, 32, or 33.  From the GSA Schedule system, the use of the schedules to buy manufactured products is very diverse utilizing 204 of these individual manufacturing NAICS Codes.  Therefore for most manufacturing firms, there is a market for their products and services on the GSA.

Pro:
Small Business is well represented in terms of manufacturing purchases.  The data table shows that small business accounts for 46.2% of all Manufacturing Sales that are derived from the GSA Schedule System.

Con:
Small business sales volume for manufacturing is $633K which is lower than the average overall small business GSA Schedule sales of approximately $1MM per small business schedule holder.

Manufacturing Advantage:
Generally, Manufacturing firms need to spend their time and effort in marketing their products.  They should, however, make sure their listings in GSA Advantage are updated, accurate and searchable.  For normal manufacturing orders picking up the phone and answering basic product questions to federal buyers is the norm.  Additionally for larger orders participating in the GSA ebuy process is effective.
